Size Guide
Last updated:
Choosing the right size is the most important decision when you buy a garden flag, doormat or yard sign. Too small and the design gets lost against the house; too big and the mat curls against the door or the sign towers over the tulips. This guide lists every size we offer, using exactly the same names you will see on the product pages, and shows you how to measure your door, porch and flower beds so you can choose with confidence. If you are still unsure, email us your measurements at [email protected] and we will recommend a size within 24 hours on business days.

How sizes are written
All sizes are in inches and written width × height for flags and signs (as you look at them), and width × depth for doormats (the long side runs along the door). The sizes describe the product itself. Flag sizes do not include a stand or pole, and sign sizes do not include anything that holds the sign up. Exact finished dimensions can vary slightly with printing and finishing; if a fraction of an inch matters for your space, ask us before you order.
Garden flags
| Size option | Dimensions | Hangs from | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garden 12 x 18 in | 12 in wide × 18 in tall | A garden flag stand (sold separately; ours fits this size) | Flower beds, the mailbox post, beside the steps, planters |
| House 28 x 40 in | 28 in wide × 40 in tall | A porch flag pole on a wall or post bracket (not sold by us) | Porch posts, beside the front door, garage walls |
How to choose a flag size
- Where will it hang? If the answer is “in the garden”, choose the Garden size; if it is “on the house”, choose the House size.
- How far away will people see it? The Garden size reads well from the front walk; the House size reads from across the street.
- Is there wording? A family name plus an “Est.” year fits comfortably on the Garden size. A grandkids’ flag with five or six names looks less crowded on the House size.
- Do you already own a stand or pole? Measure the arm of your stand: most garden flag stands hold flags about 12 inches wide. A House flag needs a pole long enough for a 28-inch-wide flag.
Doormats
| Size option | Dimensions | Typical door | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24 x 16 in | 24 in wide × 16 in deep | Narrow doors, back doors, apartment doors, mudrooms | Fits small landings and hallway entries |
| 30 x 18 in | 30 in wide × 18 in deep | A standard single front door | Our most popular size; used in the gift set |
| 36 x 24 in | 36 in wide × 24 in deep | Wide doors, double doors, deep porches | Needs a clear floor area in front of the door |
How to measure for a doormat
- Measure the width of the door frame, from the outside edge of one side of the frame to the other.
- Choose a mat that is a little narrower than the frame — a few inches on each side looks tidy — or about the same width for a generous look on a wide porch.
- Measure the clear floor in front of the door, from the threshold to the edge of the step or landing. The mat’s depth should fit inside it without hanging over the edge.
- Check any door that opens outward, such as a storm or screen door: open it fully and make sure it clears the mat.
- For double doors, measure across both doors; the 36 × 24 in mat is usually the right choice.
Worked examples
- A door frame 34 in wide, with a deep porch: 30 × 18 in for a classic look, or 36 × 24 in to fill the space.
- An apartment door 32 in wide that opens into a narrow hallway: 24 × 16 in, so neighbours can pass.
- Double doors 60 in wide: 36 × 24 in, centred.
- A back door with a step just 18 in deep: 24 × 16 in or 30 × 18 in, but not 36 × 24 in.
Yard signs and the hanging porch sign
| Size option | Dimensions | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 18 x 12 in | 18 in wide × 12 in tall | A flower bed, a raised bed, a large planter, a short front yard; a narrow wall or post for the hanging porch sign |
| 24 x 18 in | 24 in wide × 18 in tall | Lawns seen from the sidewalk or a passing car; house numbers on a long drive; a wider porch wall |
How to choose a sign size
Stand where people will usually see the sign — the sidewalk, the end of the drive or the road — and imagine a rectangle of each size at the spot you have in mind. For celebration signs (new baby, birthday) and house numbers, the larger 24 × 18 in size is easier to read from a car. For garden signs among plants, the 18 × 12 in size sits more naturally with the flowers. If you want to know how a sign stands in the ground or how the hanging sign is hung, ask us before ordering.
Porch and garden extras
| Product | Size options | How to choose |
|---|---|---|
| Porch swing throw pillow | 16 x 16 in · 18 x 18 in | 16 in for rocking chairs, benches and pairs on a swing; 18 in for sofas and wide swings |
| Garden mailbox cover | Standard · Large | Mailbox sizes vary by maker — measure the length and the curve and email us before ordering |
| Garden flag stand | One size | Holds our Garden 12 x 18 in flags |
| Gardener’s apron | One size | Ask us about the ties and fit before ordering |
| Meadow coaster set | Set of 4 | Ask us about the coaster size if it matters for your cups |
Sizes and personalisation
Each personalisation box has a character limit that fits the design on every size, so you never have to shorten a name because you chose the smaller option. Bigger sizes simply print the same words larger. Some tips:
- A family name up to 22 characters fits the family-name flag on both sizes.
- A monogram mat takes one initial and a family name up to 18 characters on all three mat sizes.
- A house number up to 6 characters reads most clearly on the 24 × 18 in sign from the road.
- Grandkids’ names: up to six. With four or more, consider the House size flag.
The paper test
The easiest way to be sure is to see the size in place before you order. Take some newspaper, wrapping paper or flattened cardboard boxes and tape pieces together to the size you are considering — for example 30 × 18 inches for a mat or 28 × 40 inches for a house flag. Lay the mat template in front of the door and open the door over it; tape the flag template to the porch post or hold it up on a broom handle; stand the sign template in the flower bed. Then walk to the sidewalk and look back. Five minutes with a tape measure and some paper answers most size questions better than any photo.
Size by placement
| Where it goes | Suggested product and size |
|---|---|
| Flower bed beside the front walk | Garden flag, Garden 12 x 18 in on a stand; or yard sign 18 x 12 in |
| Porch post or beside the front door | Garden flag in the House 28 x 40 in size on a porch pole |
| Standard single front door | Doormat 30 x 18 in |
| Double doors or a wide porch | Doormat 36 x 24 in |
| Back door, mudroom or apartment hallway | Doormat 24 x 16 in |
| Front lawn, seen from the road | Yard sign 24 x 18 in |
| End of a long driveway | House number yard sign 24 x 18 in |
| Wall beside the door or above a bench | Hanging porch sign, 18 x 12 in or 24 x 18 in |
| Porch swing or rocking chair | Throw pillow 16 x 16 in (a pair on a swing) or 18 x 18 in |
Pairing a flag with a mat
Many customers buy a flag and a doormat together for a matching front step. As a guide, a Garden 12 × 18 in flag in the bed by the steps pairs naturally with a 30 × 18 in mat at the door — the combination in our Garden Flag & Doormat Gift Set. A House 28 × 40 in flag on the porch post looks balanced with a 36 × 24 in mat on a wide porch, or a 30 × 18 in mat in front of a standard door. Seasonal pairs work the same way: the fall pumpkin flag with the fall leaves mat, the winter cardinal flag with the snowy pines mat.
Common sizing mistakes
- Measuring the door instead of the frame. Measure the outside of the frame, including the trim, for a mat that looks centred.
- Forgetting the storm door. A door that opens outward can catch on a deep mat; check the clearance.
- Buying a House flag for a garden stand. Garden stands are made for 12-inch-wide flags; a 28 × 40 in flag needs a porch pole.
- Too small for the street. A celebration sign meant for passing cars is easier to read in 24 × 18 in.
- Too many names on a small flag. With four or more grandkids’ names, the House size gives the names room.
Buying a size for someone else
Sizing a gift is harder because you cannot measure the door yourself. A few safe choices: the 30 × 18 in doormat fits most single front doors; the Garden 12 × 18 in flag works in almost any garden, and you can add our stand so it is ready to use; the 24 × 18 in yard sign is the easiest to read for a celebration. If the size turns out wrong, the recipient can exchange it within 60 days of delivery with a free return label.
Choosing between two sizes
If you are torn, think about where the piece will be seen most. Flags and signs are usually seen from further away than you expect, so the larger size is the safer choice if space allows. Doormats are the opposite: a mat that is too big for the door looks cramped and can catch on the door, so choose the smaller size if in doubt. Either way, the 24-hour change window and 60-day exchanges are there if you change your mind.
